The best time to visit the Mergui Archipelago is between October and April. This period falls during the dry season, with pleasant weather and calm seas, ideal for boat trips, snorkeling, and exploring the islands. 

During the monsoon season (May to September), the region experiences heavy rainfall and rough seas, making travel more difficult and less enjoyable. 

The most popular gateway to the Mergui Archipelago is Kawthaung. The most common route involves flying into Bangkok, then connecting to Ranong (Thailand). From there, take a long-tail boat across the river to Kawthaung, where all excursions to the Archipelago begin.  Here you can get a short routemap

Alternatively, you can travel via Yangon or directly to Kawthaung and board your boat to the islands. 

Yes, a visa is required to enter the Mergui Archipelago as it is part of Myanmar. 

Travelers can apply for an eVisa online through IVisa or the official Myanmar eVisa website:  

https:// evisa.moip.gov.mm. Ensure your visa covers entry via Kawthaung, the main gateway to the archipelago or Yangon.     

Yes, you will enter the Mergui Archipelago under a license agreement from the Myanmar Ministry of Hotels and Tourism. This requires a trip permit for each boat departure from Kawthaung, whether for an island visit or a cruise. The permit process involves providing a complete and updated passenger list and may take up to 3 weeks, depending on your package and destinations. However, South East Asia Dreams will manage all the required paperwork for the permit. You only need to ensure they have a valid visa for Myanmar.

Yes, there are resorts and accommodations in the Mergui Archipelago, including exclusive eco-resorts, boutique hotels, and private island resorts. These options typically offer luxury, seclusion, and a strong focus on sustainability. 

However, the choices are limited, so advanced booking is highly recommended. Due to the travel time to the archipelago, it's advisable to plan for a minimum of 3-4 days to fully enjoy the islands. 

While day trips by speedboat are an option, they are limited to nearby islands and often involve traveling with large groups (around 50 people). 

Many travelers prefer to stay on the islands for a more immersive experience or opt for island-hopping packages to explore the archipelago’s stunning beauty and distant islands more comfortably. Due to travel time, planning for a minimum of 3-4 days is highly recommended. 

The prices for travel packages to the Mergui Archipelago generally tend to be higher compared to many popular islands in Thailand. This difference is primarily due to factors such as accessibility, exclusivity, and the more remote nature of the Mergui Archipelago. 

Typical activities include snorkeling, diving, kayaking, fishing, island-hopping, trekking, and exploring the pristine beaches. There are also cultural experiences with local indigenous groups like the Moken sea gypsies.

The area is generally safe for tourists, though it’s important to travel with experienced, licensed guides, especially to ensure cultural respect and safety around the islands' remote areas. You should also be cautious about wildlife, encounters, and natural hazards, such as strong currents when swimming.

There are no transport options (such as ferries) between islands, so the best way if you like to visit more than one island is to join an island hopping package or charter your own boat. We are more than happy to put something together for you. 

Internet and mobile phone coverage in the Mergui Archipelago is limited, especially on remote islands. While many resorts offer Wi-Fi, it is often slower than what you might be accustomed to and may occasionally not work a few times. This makes it the perfect opportunity for a digital detox, allowing you to disconnect, unwind, and fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty and tranquility of the archipelago.
