Hidden Histories, Riverside Legends & an Evening of Thai Elegance

After a leisurely riverside breakfast at your hotel, your cultural adventure begins at 9:00 am with a scenic longtail boat ride along the Chao Phraya River, where Bangkok’s timeless spirit reveals itself between shimmering temples and quiet communities.

Your first stop is a little-known Chinese shrine near Wat Anongkharam, dating back to the days when Thonburi served as Thailand’s capital. A short walk brings you to the former residence of the Queen Mother, nestled within a serene park—a peaceful oasis where a memorial museum shares touching insights into the life and history of the local Wat Anongkharam community.

We continue to the distinctive Santa Cruz Church, a striking riverside landmark reflecting Bangkok’s Portuguese legacy. Then it’s time to wander the narrow alleyways of Kudi Chin, a unique multicultural village where time stands still. Here, we’ll pause for a delightful treat: sampling homemade European-style cakes at a beloved local bakery passed down through generations.

Our journey leads us to the riverside sanctuary of Wat Rakang, or the Temple of Bells. Steeped in history from the Ayutthaya era, this sacred site is known for its revered bell, which promises good fortune to those who ring it.

As twilight falls, we’ll transfer to the refined Thara Thong Restaurant, set within a beautiful hand-carved teakwood pavilion at the Sheraton Riverside Hotel. Dine in traditional Thai style—on low seating with delicate tableware—while enjoying graceful classical dance performances and live Thai music. After dinner, a comfortable transfer returns you to your riverside retreat for a restful night.

History, River Kwai & Heart-Stirring Stories

It’s time to delve into the poignant history of Kanchanaburi. Begin with a visit to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, where you’ll discover the powerful stories behind the infamous Death Railway. The Bridge on the River Kwai awaits—stand in awe of this iconic landmark that’s rich with history.

As the sun begins to set, board a boat for a magical evening ride along the River Kwai, feeling the cool breeze as you pass by lush jungle and rustic villages. Dinner is served riverside, where you can savor traditional Thai dishes while taking in the breathtaking views.

Overnight at "The FloatHouse River Kwai" (4★) or "Hintok River Camp" (4★) (alternative for a unique glamping experience with camp fire)

From Riverside Jungle to Royal Grandeur

After breakfast, we leave the lush scenery of Kanchanaburi behind and drive east (approx. 170 km) to Ayutthaya, the former Siamese capital and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This once-glorious city, located at the confluence of three rivers, still showcases the grandeur of its past through stunning temple ruins and royal monuments.

Our discovery begins with a tuk-tuk ride around the island’s historic park. We visit Wat Mahathat, home to the iconic Buddha head entwined in tree roots, and Wat Lokayasutharam, where a massive Reclining Buddha rests peacefully in the open air.

Next, we sample Ayutthaya’s famous roti sai mai (Thai cotton candy) and even try our hand at crafting it with local guidance. Lunch is served by the riverside before we stroll through the Talad Klang Pue Kaset Tagon market, soaking in local life and colorful stalls.

In the afternoon, we join a meditation session at Wat Maheyong, a serene experience amidst sacred ruins. After checking in at the boutique iuDia Hotel, we end the day with a private dinner cruise along the river—watching temples glow under the evening sky as we dine on refined Thai cuisine.

Overnight at  “iuDia Hotel” (4★) or “Sala Ayutthaya” (4★+/5★)

Journey into Thailand’s Golden Era

Today we travel deep into Thailand’s historical heart. After an early breakfast, we begin our 354-km drive north to Sukhothai, the first capital of the Kingdom of Siam and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the “Dawn of Happiness,” Sukhothai is where the Thai alphabet was born and where Thai culture flourished during its golden age in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Our historical exploration begins with Prang Sam Yod, the striking three-spired pagoda, followed by a stop at the nearby Monkey Temple, where mischievous macaques are part of the experience.

After a local lunch, we dive into the heart of Sukhothai Historical Park, an atmospheric landscape of moats, lotus-filled ponds, and timeworn ruins. Spanning 45 square kilometers, the park features nearly 200 historical sites including royal palaces, temples, city walls, and ancient water systems—offering a remarkable window into Thailand’s past.

We check in at our boutique hotel and enjoy a relaxed dinner surrounded by peaceful countryside.

Overnight at “The Legendha Sukhothai” (4★) or “Le Charme Sukhothai Historical Park Resort” (4★)

From Ancient Temples to Rural Traditions

Today, we experience a more personal side of Sukhothai—where ancient traditions meet every day rural life. After breakfast, we head out to the Sukhothai Organic Agriculture Farm, where we roll up our sleeves and dive into the rhythms of Thai country living. Depending on the season, we’ll help plant, harvest, or mill rice, and even plough the fields with a water buffalo—a hands-on and fun experience that offers insight into sustainable farming in Thailand.

After a hearty farm lunch, our journey continues to Sri Satchanalai, once a key northern outpost of the Sukhothai Kingdom. We explore two of its most important temple ruins—Wat Chang Lom, known for its elephant-guarded chedi, and Wat Chedi Jet Thaew, with its elegant lines and historic significance. We return to the hotel in the late afternoon for a peaceful evening at leisure.

Overnight at “The Legendha Sukhothai” (4★) or “Le Charme Sukhothai Historical Park Resort” (4★)

Into the Heart of the North

Today, we journey north to the cultural capital of Northern Thailand—Chiang Mai, the enchanting former capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Surrounded by forested hills and rich farmlands, this “Rose of the North” is known for its misty mountains, centuries-old temples, and vibrant handicraft traditions.

After breakfast, we depart at 8 am, traveling through scenic landscapes toward Lampang. Here, we stop to visit Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, one of Thailand’s most revered wooden temples and the only other temple housing an Emerald Buddha, besides Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.

Next, we sample crispy rice crackers at a small local factory—an authentic taste of Northern Thai snacks. A short visit to the Kad Ban Ta Market provides insight into regional produce and daily life, before we continue to Chiang Mai.

Upon arrival, we check in and have time to unwind before an evening of Northern Thai culture. Dinner is served Khantoke-styleat Benjarong, accompanied by traditional Lanna dance and storytelling by hill tribe members—a warm and memorable introduction to this fascinating region.

Overnight at “Tamarind Village” (4★) or  “Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort” (5★)

A Day of Spirituality & Cultural Wonders

Today, immerse yourself in the deep spirituality and vibrant culture that define Chiang Mai. We begin early, participating in a traditional monk alms offering—a peaceful and reflective ritual where we "gain merit" by donating food to monks and receiving a blessing in return. It’s a meaningful experience believed to bring happiness and good fortune.

After this serene start, we return to the hotel for breakfast, then embark on a scenic drive up Serpentine Road to Wat Doi Suthep, one of Thailand's most sacred temples. Perched high on a mountain, the temple dates back to 1383 and offers stunning panoramic views of Chiang Mai city and the lush Ping Valley below.

Next, we head down to Talat Warorod, Chiang Mai's largest and most bustling market, where the vibrant colors and scents of local goods fill the air. From here, we take a rickshaw ride to Wat Chedi Luang, Chiang Mai's oldest and most majestic temple, dating back to the 14th century.

After a delicious lunch, we explore a handicraft village, where you can shop for exquisite, locally made souvenirs. Then, it’s time to indulge in an unforgettable dining experience at The Gallery Restaurant, located in a beautiful teakwood building by the Ping River. Built in 1892, it houses both an art gallery and a charming riverside restaurant that serves mouthwatering dishes. After this enriching day, return to the resort for a peaceful evening.

Overnight at “Tamarind Village” (4★) or  “Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort” (5★)

Exploring the Heart of Northern Thailand

Today, we journey to Chiang Rai, the far northern city that marks the entrance to the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. Nestled in a stunning mountain landscape, Chiang Rai is rich in history, culture, and artistry. Founded in 1262 by King Mengrai, it was once part of the Lao-Thai Lanna kingdom before becoming part of Siam in 1786.

After breakfast, we depart at 7 am for the 186-km drive north. Upon arrival, we visit the world-renowned Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple. Designed by celebrated Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, this temple combines traditional Buddhist art with contemporary themes, and its exterior, adorned with small pieces of mirrored glass, creates a striking effect against the bright sky.

After lunch, we venture to Baan Dam (Black House), an eclectic and thought-provoking creation by Thai artist Thawan Duchanee. A unique blend of traditional and modern designs, this structure serves as a museum, art studio, and home. The dark, mysterious atmosphere of this “house” makes for an unforgettable experience.

We then check-in at the hotel for a relaxing evening.

Overnight at “The Legend Chiang Rai Boutique River Resort & Spa” (4★) or “Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort” (5★)

A Day of Exploration and Discovery

Today is yours to uncover the splendor of Chiang Rai, with its wealth of historical landmarks and cultural gems. For a deep dive into the city's royal history, visit Wat Phra Kaew, a sacred temple that once housed Thailand's revered Emerald Buddha. While the original is now in Bangkok, a replica here still exudes majesty and importance. Nearby, marvel at the Navel City Pillar, a monumental structure composed of over 100 Khmer-style pillars, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient architecture.

If you're craving more cultural immersion, head to Mae Fah Luang Art and Cultural Park. This remarkable site is a haven for art lovers and history buffs alike, boasting a museum with fascinating Lannaartifacts, many of which are crafted from teak. The park’s expansive grounds feature Buddhist shrines, antiques, and some of the most meticulously landscaped gardens in the region. A true highlight is Haw Kham, a temple-like tower constructed in 1984 from the remains of 32 traditional wooden houses. With a Buddha statue seemingly suspended above the white sands, this striking structure promises an awe-inspiring experience.

With free time to roam at your own pace, enjoy Chiang Rai’s peaceful atmosphere, or perhaps indulge in a quiet afternoon by the river.
